Top Tips on Writing to Sell: Part One

Read our  two part series of top tips on writing to sell for dealers…

They say there is nothing more powerful than the written word and I’m inclined to agree, dealers thrive off face to face interaction but with the internet being the main place people start their search for a new car these days, it’s vital that your messages on portals and websites persuade the reader to make an enquiry or visit your forecourt.

Writing effective text for websites and advertising portals can be difficult and time consuming, so I’ve come up with a two part series of top tips to help dealers focus on writing to sell more vehicles.

Be Organised!

Your message should progress logically from the headline to the clincher! In the same way that all the best stories have a clear beginning, middle and an end, so should blog posts and vehicle descriptions. Whatever you do, don’t hide essential information in the bowels of your write up, or get mixed up in too many facts and figures that cause the reader to lose interest.

Be Specific

Do everything you can to sharpen the picture in the reader’s mind, this is particularly important when you’re still waiting to upload stock images! Use simple, observable details to create vivid images for web browsers and avoid approximations and abstractions at all costs!

Be Accurate

Make sure that you get your facts straight! Do not leave your business open to allegations of false advertising by making claims that can’t be substantiated. It’s sometimes easy to get carried away but dealers should resist the temptation to exaggerate in pursuit of an easy sale, be truthful and your customers will appreciate your honesty and integrity.

Don’t Lose Sight of Your Primary Goal: to Sell Your Product or Service

Your descriptions on advertising portals and your website should be more than a basic presentation of boring facts and figures, they need to be motivational and persuasive above all else! Don’t let your creativity runaway with you and bury the message, your audience need to remember what you’re pushing. Remember, write to sell!

Stress the Benefits

Resist the temptation to blow your own trumpet! It shouldn’t be “look how great we are” but rather, “see what we can do for you.” Show your potential customers how your product can help them and write with their interests in mind! It should always be customer centred copy as oppose to company centric messaging.

Arouse Interest

From the title of the post to the call to action at the end, your text needs to constantly pique the reader’s curiosity! As you list the benefits, keep littering your copy with helpful tips, colourful phrases and handy facts to keep things interesting.
