SUV Purchase Patterns Affected by Petrol and Hybrid Options

Premium SUVs date back to the 70s with the launch of the Range Rover. A capable off roader with a refined interior; this design has remained popular for decades and has recently exploded with every manufacturer throwing their hat into the ring.

When debuted, these cars were never marketed as fast or economical. They were competent, go anywhere vehicles. Fast forward to this decade and a modern SUV isn’t comparable to the old other than their ride height. Everyone from Dacia to Lamborghini make an SUV, every niche imaginable is filled with several SUV options.

Appeal of the SUV

A superior driving position and more space are often the selling points for these types of vehicles, however in decades gone by it was easy to dismiss a premium SUV as they nearly always contained a lethargic and unreliable diesel engine. Nowadays however, a plethora of engines are available, from hybrids to fully electric; the consumer is spoilt for choice.

Changing Engines

As environmental issues surrounding diesels have come to light in recent years, manufacturers have had to offer a greater range of alternatives to the general public. Engines as small as 1.0l have been seen powering SUVs; albeit very small ones! Over the last year, retail asking prices for petrol powered cars have risen notably as a percentage of original new cost. Despite this, there are still far fewer petrol examples on the market than diesel ones.

Despite the poor press for diesel, sales have remained reasonably consistent. Manufacturers are constantly producing smaller and greener diesel engines, that comply fully with Euro 6 emissions tests, that don’t compromise on power.

As hybrid powertrains become more mainstream and more economical, it’ll be interesting to see how the market shifts. The market leaders are also starting to show their desire to bring fully electric SUVs to the market, the likes of Audi with their e-tron and Mercedes with the EQC are ready to challenge the Tesla Model X which so far has had the run of the market.
