Gone are the days of limited choice for family cars. No more compromising style so you can fit the kids and all the baggage that comes with them in!

Nowadays, many people are going for SUVs and MPVs instead but this doesn’t mean that the family car sector is dead. It is very competitive and counts for a lot of sales, meaning there are plenty of great deals to get your hands on!

There are several aspects which when combined make the perfect family car: good value for money, being cheap to run, practicality, and space!

Here we count down Click Dealer’s top 10 models…

10. Land Rover Discovery Sport

Land Rover Discovery Sport

A compact SUV with classy interior and low CO2 emissions lands the Discover Sport in at number 10 out of our top 10 family cars. It has excellent off-road ability with its four-wheeled drive and boasts practicality due to the spacious size. There are two engines to choose from; the 148bhp TD4 which is more ‘eco-friendly’, and the 178bhp TD4 engine. This one has seven seats and contains a six-speed gearbox, with the choice to add Land Rover’s nine-speed auto.Costs for the Discovery Sport start at around £31,000 and rise to about £47,000.

This vehicle provides a spacious, comfortable drive- a perfectly practical family car. Any people carrier will be hard pushed to topple the C4 Picasso; the model comes with a choice of five or seven seats and has three trims to choose from: Touch Edition, Feel and Flair. All three have a variety of features such as rear parking sensors and cruise control.

Feel models add satellite navigation and larger alloy wheels whilst the Flair boasts massage seats and tinted rear windows. The petrol engine has a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo with either 110hp or 130hp whilst the diesel range has 1.6 and 2.0 BlueHDi units. The 1.6 BlueHDi has either 100hp or 120hp.

8. Volvo XC90

Volvo’s best-selling model worldwide speeds in at number eight. The XC90 is a luxurious SUV which has been branded ‘the ultimate family 4×4’.

All UK models are seven seaters and contain a large amount of leg and head room. Even if all the seats are occupied, there is still plenty of room to fit all your bags in the boot, which puts many estate cars to shame.

A smooth drive over poor surfaces with light and easy steering raises the standards of your typical 4×4. The modern leather-trimmed dashboard gives the car a modern yet classy feel.

Price starts from £46,850.

7. Toyota Prius

The ‘green’ Prius has earned its spot due to the excellent low emissions and reliability.

The spacious cabin and boot means this hybrid is not losing out against the hefty 4x4s and SUVs. There are plenty of features throughout the car which make it stand out although the exterior may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

3.5million Prius’ have been sold since its launch in 1997 and it’s clear why,  the drive is easy and they can certainly hack long distances.

Prius have a 1.8-litre petrol engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. Taxes are low and so are the fuel bills.

These models start from £26,759.

6. Volkswagen Passat

Competing against the high-end family cars is the Passat. 22million models have been sold since its launch in 1973 and it has been evolving ever since.

This vehicle is great for those who would like to combine driving enjoyment with the high standard of interior design. The model comes in five trim levels, from the S-line to the R-line. The S-line comes with a range of features such as electrical and heated door mirrors, post collision breaking and a cooled glovebox. The range starts with the 118bhp 1.6 TDI and rises to the 237bhp 2.0 BiTDI.

The engine’s vibrations are well controlled and the drive is well refined and significantly smooth. Travelling long distances isn’t a problem for this car and it also has the option of a roof rack for your family weekends away.

The Passat starts from £22,515.

5. Seat Ateca

The Seat Ateca is quite like the new VW Tiguan, but is much more compact. This however, does not make the car cramped. It is positioned on the same frame as the Seat Leon five-door model so there is plenty of room.

The range has a 1.0 litre petrol, followed by the 150bhp 1.4 turbo petrol and a noisy 2.0 litre diesel.

Handling is second to none. The vehicle glides smoothly around corners and roundabouts despite the size of the body, and suspension is available for the rear which brings precise cornering.

4. Vauxhall Astra

The affordable Astra is a popular choice as a sensible family hatchback. For many years, it’s been one of the UK’s best sellers.

Its most recent update sees the Astra looking smaller on the outside yet bigger on the inside, which includes a range of new technology.

Engine sizes- 99bhp 1.4litre petrol, 104bhp three-cylinder 1.0 litre. More flexible engines are the 1.4litre turbocharged petrol’s with 123bhp or 148bhp. Even more power comes with the 1.6 litre petrol engine.

When going around corners the Astra’s weight reduces so that smoothness around bends is seamless. The drive is enjoyable due to a combination of features such as sat nav, a beautiful black gloss cabin with plenty of head and leg space in both the front and rear of the car.

The Vauxhall Astra comes in at a starting cost of £16,535-£25,240.

3. Skoda Kodiaq

This model comes with a 4×4 option and an off-road mode. It gives the impression of a large vehicle but in fact it is just 4cm longer than the Octavia estate. This makes the car easy to manoeuvre around car parks and isn’t too big to do daily errands in.

The car steers in smooth, neat lines and can fit up to seven people in it. The interior is soft and embellished with metallic and glossy décor.

The best version of this model to purchase would be the 148bhp 2.0 TDI. The Kodaiq starts from £21,935-£35.580

2. Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport

Vauxhall Insignia Grand Sport

The four-door Insignia saloon has launched this summer. The Grande Sport model has a coupe feel and oozes sophistication with its clean-cut exterior and the ‘sweepspear’ deep creases.

The Insignia has four-wheeled drive which means handling and safety is improved in tricky conditions.

The additional add-ons include wireless charging and a Bose sound system so your drive is as enjoyable as possible.

There is a choice between a 1.5 litre petrol engine and a 1.6 litre diesel.

Prices start from £17,910.

1. Skoda Superb

In at the winning spot is the Skoda Superb. It lives up to its name with an affordable price and premium features.

The drive and feel of the car is comfortable and smooth which ensures a pleasurable ride.

The boot boasts a huge amount of room, which for a family who like to travel would be ideal. The car comes with a variety of interesting ideas such as an umbrella storage compartment in the car doors, lane-keep assist and park assist features.

The choices to be had engine-wise are 188bhp 2.0 TDI, 148bhp 2.0 TDI for diesel. For petrol, the options are: 124bhp and 149 bhp 1.4 litre TSI. The 2.0 litre TSI is available in 217bhp or 276 bhp.

Prices for the Skoda Superb start from £19,245.
